The 2001 Picolight Fly-in, Milbrulong
Here are some images from the
2001 Picolight Fly-in held at Milbrulong, NSW from 21st to 23rd September. The fly-in was held in a paddock owned by Jeff and Lorraine Hoffman and is a kilometer west of the Milbrulong recreation reserve where the participants camped with full use of the rec. reserve hall facilities. At one count, there were 25 machines present, mostly powered paragliders, but also two powered hang glider harnesses, two nanolight trikes, a two seat Edge trike and four powered parachutes. Conditions on Friday were windy early, but the later afternoon
and evening provided perfect weather for low-level flying. After a night of
thunderstorms and rain, Saturday was also windy early, but once again, calmed
substantially in later morning and afternoon. Prime television came out and took footage of many of the machines in action, including a rather embarrassing misjudgement by one paramotor pilot who damaged a propeller doing a low pass. As usual, the presence of a camera extracted much latent testosterone. Thrust and noise level tests were conducted, and some interesting
results were obtained. King of the thrust stakes was the Airtime Products paramotor
and nanolight trike, both powered by the Cors-Air engine, which acheived at least 58kg
thrust, but also a level of 116db noise 1 metre from the exhaust. Some other units
were found to have rather less thrust than perhaps their owners were led to expect from
manufacturers advertising....
